Didn’t Bubble’s new pricing model just kill Bubble.io? Haven’t most people moved on?

There’s no denying that Bubble’s price model change (in May 2023) was initially a shock to some vocal community members.

Some people that had hobby projects or small side hustles on Bubble may no longer find Bubble affordable. Thus the vocal outcry at the change.

This being said, Bubble’s pricing model change has not made a material impact on the growing demand for Bubble from established businesses and funded startups.

In our assessment, Bubble’s pricing model change will make most apps with moderate traffic/workload 10–50% more expensive to run.

Probably the biggest group affected will be those with lower purchasing power parity with the USA, for whom a 10–50% increase will be quite significant.

However, it must be pointed out that Bubble’s old pricing was VERY cheap compared to similar enterprise no-code low-code (NCLC) platforms, up to 10x less expensive in our assessment.

Bubble’s old pricing model penalized Bubble for apps that had high capacity usage. The new model aligns price more closely with server resources consumed.

Momentum has continued to see strong and increasing inquiry and new project initiation following the pricing change.

One upshot is that now Developers need to be better educated on how to build an app in an efficient and maintainable way, and so the changes simply increase demand for quality Bubble developers.

The pricing changes have not killed Bubble. It has caused a reframe of the way Bubble developers will need to think about the tool, with increased knowledge and planning required to avoid overages.

Where this story went

We spent five years mastering Bubble. Now we build with AI.

Momentum was one of the world's leading Bubble.io agencies — that's why we wrote this article. These days we build and migrate the same kinds of products with Claude Code: real, portable code your own team can amend with AI. If you're weighing up a move off Bubble (or any platform), we've made the journey ourselves.
