Switching from finance to tech seemed daunting, but no code turned it into a reality faster than I’d ever imagined. Completing Momentum Academy’s Bubble io Certification Programme has empowered me to build no code apps and launch a new career.

Just four months after starting the course, I began earning with the skills I’d gained with Momentum Academy. Since completing the programme, I have built my first web app, had the opportunity to work on a number of apps for clients and become a mentor for aspiring developers.

Finding My Tech Calling

Having worked in the finance sector for a number of years I left my job to relocate for my husband’s work. I was at a crossroads and knew that I needed additional training for further success in finance but questioned whether that was the right path for me.

I’d had experience in successfully transitioning the accounts processes of a small business into digital working and was amazed at the results. I was able to work much faster and with greater accuracy. In my last role in finance, I was inspired to begin to explore ways to use digital tools to process data instead of the manual ways we were doing these tasks. These experiences gave me a taste of the value of tech in the real world.

An article on women in tech grabbed my attention and I was shocked to discover that not only is the gender gap in tech still significant but that instead of shrinking it is actually growing. Not only are women currently underrepresented in tech but if current trends continue they will have less representation in the future. *“1984, 35% of technology leadership roles were held by women. Today, over forty years later, that figure has fallen to 28%”.

The First Steps

I came across an organisation called ‘Code First Girls’ and wondered whether a career in tech was the way for me. But could I do this? I took my first mini courses and discovered I could do this. I progressed and successfully completed multiple courses and learned how to code. I realised that a career in tech was accessible to me and that my previous skills were transferable.

Discovering No-Code

I realised that the world of tech was vast and that I needed to focus on one skill in order to launch a career. That was when I discovered no-code. During the Christmas break I built my first tiny app with bubble.io and I was hooked. The app was a simple ‘to-do’ list app where I could add and delete tasks to a list. It was easy to build the user interface and I was amazed that I could build an app that handled data so quickly. Although I had been learning how to code, switching to no code would enable me to progress much faster and build scalable digital products for the real world.

Learning Valuable Skills with Momentum Academy

I found Momentum Academy and watched their webinar about the course which was really helpful. I then had a one to one call with the founder, Will Ericksson and I felt this was the right course for me.

The teaching style on the course is super accessible, even if you are completely new to no code and have never done coding before. The style is to build along with the teaching videos so you immediately put into practice the concepts being taught. We had weekly Q&A sessions which were so helpful to not only ask my own questions but to interact with others on the course and listen to their questions. We also had a community where we could get help and support each other.

Concepts such as how to go about planning and designing an app, how to manage privacy and protect users and how to ensure your app works efficiently and is not costly to run would have been difficult to learn without guidance.

Mentoring Role

I have continued my connection with Momentum Academy where I now work as a mentor to support students. This role has not only helped me to consolidate my own learning but it is fulfilling to help others succeed too. I help students trouble shoot issues they are having and provide feedback on their homework.

Working on Real World Apps

After completing the demo apps in the course I have progressed to work on a number of apps for use in the real world. It has been exciting to realise the possibilities that working with Bubble.io opens up and to put my new skills to good use.
