Legacy

My journey from registered nurse to no-code software developer

Background

I’ve always had a passion for solving problems and technology.

I started my career in Nursing, and after 12 years, moved into a role in Data Analytics and Engineering in healthcare for the next 5 years.

I always quietly wanted to work in tech as a software developer, and eventually start my own tech business.

But life, mortgage, my job, kids and generally being a grown-up got in the way! I didn’t think a transition would be easy or even possible.

Transition

In 2020, I was able to take Long Service Leave.

I found Bubble in 2020, during a startup accelerator program Founder Institue (Sydney Spring Cohort).

I signed up for a Bubble Bootcamp. It cost $800 USD. After I signed up, I seriously thought “What have I done?”

I even looked up trying to back out of the course. Luckily they had “no refunds” so I persisted! During the boot camp, I learned a lot from Mariel my instructor. I did extra 1:1 sessions to answer all my questions.

During one mentoring session, she said “You know, you could teach this!”. And she made an intro to the people at Bubble.

Teaching & consulting

5 months later… I left my job, started teaching for Bubble, and started Momentum, bootstrapped from our savings and funded by revenue.

I started with $500, $1,000, and $2000 consulting gigs. Whatever I could to get experience, I took it. I quickly moved to higher-paying jobs when I had a track record.

In the first 7 months of operating, we brought in $120,000, 1.5x my previous annual income revenue. I added 4 team members.

Growth path

Opportunities kept coming. My team and I built over 40 apps in 2 years. Small ones. Big ones. We grew Momentum to over 20 full-time team members.

Transacted over $2mil revenue in 2.5 years.

Now we focus on high-value projects over $100,000.

We are in demand as one of the leading Bubble development agencies globally.

What this means for you

I’m confident that whatever path you choose (to become a dev, to run a business, to build your own app), learning Bubble is a way to:

Open your world to massive opportunity.Increase your earning capacity.Do work that is satisfying and meaningful. After teaching both Bubble Bootcamps and Bubble’s Immerse program, we’ve developed our Momentum Academy course that teaches you how to make the journey I made, minus a lot of the mistakes along the way!

Where this story went

We spent five years mastering Bubble. Now we build with AI.

Momentum was one of the world's leading Bubble.io agencies — that's why we wrote this article. These days we build and migrate the same kinds of products with Claude Code: real, portable code your own team can amend with AI. If you're weighing up a move off Bubble (or any platform), we've made the journey ourselves.
