Would you spend $100,000+ building a digital product on Bubble?

What we’ve learned from >$2mil consulting work in Bubble

Our agency MomentumGroup.tech has completed over 35 web application builds for clients on the no-code platform Bubble.io (and another 10 or so built internally) with a turnover of around $2mil USD in just over 24 months of trading. Most of this income has been derived from our product-building work, either UXUI design, Bubble.io development, or Product Management.

Behind these numbers, there are many stories to tell - but more on that another day!

Small projects, big projects

In this project number, there are a number of $2,000–$10,000 projects I completed in the first six months of our business as a 1–3 person operation.

However, our success as an Agency has been in working with established businesses or startups with significant funding and taking on mostly $75,000-$150,000 projects, and a handful over this value.

Not just for lean MVPs

There is an idea “out there” that Bubble is just for lean Minimum Viable Products (MVPs). While Bubble is strong in this area, we have demonstrated that Bubble is also a great choice for other demographics:

• Small and medium businesses wanting to digitise their processes
• Organizations wanting to enhance their digital presence
• Funded startups who are building digital solutions to scale their business

Bubble for “big” projects

Now there is a lot to discuss regarding the pros and cons of building a $100,000+ project on Bubble. I will expand on this in other articles.

Ultimately the decision to use Bubble should be a Business decision, not solely a technical decision.

The questions to start with are as follows:

• Is Bubble the right tool for the business’s requirements?
• Do the business requirements map well to Bubble’s strengths?
• Do any of Bubble’s weaknesses present an issue for the business’s requirements?

These are the important questions. Now there are more technical questions that flow on from these about specific details, but this is the place to start.

Value proposition

If Bubble looks like a viable tool for your project after asking these questions, then Bubble is a great choice.

Why?

Bubble projects are lower cost to build, and lower cost to maintain compared with code-based solutions and comparable enterprise no-code low-code solutions.

And that’s it.

We’ve done the numbers, we’ve spoken to hundreds of people in the space, and the conclusion is that your:

• Dev costs will be 20–40% of that of traditional coding. If you are going to do custom code, you better have a good rationale (and there are lots of use cases where it makes sense) — don’t just do it because it’s in your zone of comfort.
• License fees and dev costs will be <20% of an equivalent enterprise NCLC solution. If you are going to use one of these, it’s probably because they have a big name. And the trust that this brand conveys. But it’s a high cost to pay for the brand.

Like everything, the biggest saving you make is in the execution. Choose a team that can bring your vision to life (regardless of platform) in the most efficient way possible, using the best tool for the task at hand.
